Stamp Game

Purpose:

To compose quantities with the stamps for the use in operations.

Age:

4.5-5 years old.

Materials:

  • A set of wooden Stamps:
    • 25 are green with “1” written on them
    • 25 are blue with “10” written on them
    • 25 are red with “100” written on them
    • 25 are green with “1000” written on them
  • There are a variety of Skittles
    • Small green representing 1
    • Blue representing 10
    • Red representing 100
    • Large green representing 1000
    • Note: The blue, red and large green Skittles are used at the Elementary level
  • Squard paper and a pencil
  • Note 1: This material is used individually by the children following the correlating “Four Operations” activity. For example, you would not teach a child the Addition Stamp Game before he mastered Addition with the Bead Material
  • Note 2: The Stamp Game is used for the Four Operations in the decimal system and is very similar to the exercises with the Bead Material. The Stamp Game represents and intellectual move towards abstraction, since the concrete representation of quantity is not as apparent.
  • Note 3: Before you start, be sure to introduce the Stamp Game Material by taking one of each hierarchy from the Bead Material and comparing it to each category of the Stamps; e.g, one Unit Bead equals one green Stamp with “1” written on it; one Ten Bead Bar equals one Blue Stamp, etc.
  • Note 4: Use the correct terminology when you present the various operations to the children:
    • Addition: Addend plus Addend equals Sum
    • Multiplication: Multiplier times Multiplicand equals Product
    • Subtraction: Minuend minus Subtrahend equals Difference
    • Division: Dividend divided by Divisor equals Quotient
  • Note 5: The Stamp Game is a step towards abstraction, as the process is very similar to the Four Operations.
